To refresh your memory, I am highlighting films that I walked away pleasantly surprised about, most of which not knowing anything about prior.

Film Surprise #2
Spanish Prisoner 1997
Campbell Scott, Steve Martin; written and directed by David Mamet

Here's the equation as I thought it would be:
My wife suggested seeing this
+
the title
=
18th century Merchant Ivory production of Spanish monks, love affairs between servants and masters and lots of funny accents (or so I thought it would be)

As soon as the credits opened, and Steve Martin's name came up, my reluctance visibly vanished leading my wife to say "if only Martin Short did Shakespeare." It's a cleverly written mystery with lots of twists in the style of Hitchcock's The Wrong Man. Easily my favorite movie of that year and a most welcome surprise.
