check your manners at the door
I think lately I have been too polite, if there is such a thing. It came to my attention that I have been holding doors for people that aren't even close to being in the 'courtesy door-hold zone'. Then I started to think about it. What is the norm. I mean, some people don't hold at all, sometimes pretending they don't see you. Certainly I am more apt to hold the door for a female or elderly person. But the other day, it was pretty uncomfortable. I was holding the door for a lady that was at least 20 ft away, when she stopped to look at the newspaper machine. Now I was at a crossroads. She could be just glancing at the front page, or she could be stopping to purchase and then walking away. How long do I hold. Do I ask if she's coming? I think I will implement a 2 second (in the one-one hundred fashion) rule from here on. They have to be at that door within 2 seconds. That's it, it's on the books.
